Downtown "It" Babes, Autumn 2010

New York is a concrete jungle.  And within it, Everyday Glamour Chicks, (E.G.C.'s), come in every stripe.  But none so ferocious as the untamed Downtown "It" Babes, (D.I.B.'s).  You know a D.I.B. when you see one.  'Cuz she's so cool you wanna be just like her.

So you wanna be a D.I.B.?  I have the copycat list!  Just don't forget to add in some smoldering attitude.....

  • Leather jacket--Ultra fitted, ultra soft, and basically worn with just about everything....

  • Faux fur vest--She throws this on over a floral mini-dress and adds tall boots and a slouchy knit hat.  Or...she throws it on over a slouchy t-shirt and jeans...Or...she throws it on over her leather jacket and jeans....

  • Military jacket--This tops most anything but she'll mix it up over a lace mini skirt and high heel ankle booties...

  • Chunky knit sweater--Worn slouchy over skinny jeans..

  • Skinny jeans--A staple, what can I say?

  • Streamlined cargo pants--Olive drab pants that are really fitted, not those awful baggy ones--that is sooo '90s!  Worn with a slouchy t-shirt and a cross body hobo...Or worn with a dressy, drapey, sexy top and heels...

  • Chain strap handbag--Tough chic.  She's way cool.

  • T-shirt dress--Worn with tough looking, low heeled boots and one of her jackets, (see above)...

  • Short heeled ankle boots--Worn with skinny jeans....

  • Edgy high heeled ankle boots--Watch for "paperbag" styles, studded styles, lace-ups, wedges, and peep-toes....

  • Over-the-knee boots--She wears these with skinny jeans, leggings, and mini-skirts...

Minimalism is Always in Style

Celine RTW Fall 2010 courtesy of www.Style.com

I knew it would come to this.  Fashion is finally catching on to the Everyday Glamour Chick's, (E.G.C.'s), astute ways.  The new fashion zeitgeist for Fall is absolutely spot-on consistent with what E.G.C.'s have known for years about style.  Well, la-di-da!  I can prove it!!  Let's take a little tour of Everyday Glamour, and you'll see that the so-called new minimalist aesthetic that's happening in  fashion right now is really nothing new....

Designers are homing in on offering timeless basics that can last for years to come.  And you learned about that in Building Your Basics:  Get To the Core of the Matter

This new minimalism isn't about looking austere and severe, but rather about making smart choices--it's about quality and confidence!  Just reaquaint yourself with La Fashionista Vs. Under-the-Radar-Chick and you'll remember.

A plethora of silhouettes are being offered in the stores, guaranteeing that every woman can accentuate her assets in the most flattering way.  Refresher coarses in figure flattery are:  Pythagoras, Fibonacci, & YOU!! and Accentuate the Assets

In fact, this season is the perfect time to invest in a serious coat, (or three).  (Remember, Coats:  Warm, Fuzzy, & Chic?)

And hair styles have become more natural and fuss free--but this doesn't mean unkempt!  Take a look at Hair:  Crowning Glory.

Don't forget that the best handbags may cost you a pretty penny, but at least they are simple and logo free--just like the handbags promoted in Handbags:  Symbols of um...Femininity.

Ahh!  I'll just recline back with my hands behind my head and a smile on my face.  Don't worry, I'll resist the urge to say, "Told ya so!"

Boots & Bag Report, Autumn 2010

August is full of promise--the promise of a new, fresh style.  With Autumn just around the corner, it's the perfect time to plan your spectacular sartorial come-back.  Don't know where to start?  Dolls, if you're tempted to completely overhaul your wardrobe, think again!  Forget clothes for a while and focus on accessories.  Everyday Glamour Chicks, (E.G.C.'s), know that the  best way to push your style from ho-hum to whoa-she's-fierce is to spend an insane amount of money on shoes and handbags.  You heard me.  Uh huh.  Whatever your budget for shoes and handbags this season is, multiply that by four and now you have your new and improved shoe and handbag budget.  So what if you'll be eating ramen noodles for the next 6 months?  At least you'll look fierce!

Beyond Black

Photo of Alexa Chung courtesy of www.wardrobemag.wordpress.com

Women in New York City don black clothing like glamourous coats of armor.  This is because they believe that wearing black instantly telegraphs a heady blend of seriousness mixed with sophistocation and perhaps a bit of mystery.  (Plus, have you heard that black is slimming?  Well, that's what I've heard and anyway why take your chances?)  So why bother ever wearing any color other than black?

Because wearing black can get a little boring after a while, that's why.  Plus it can be aging.  We can call it "Dowager Chic".  I imagine that dowagers always look slim, though, what with all the black that they wear.

Oh hell, who am I kidding?  Black is the bomb.  It is glamourous.  It is sophistocated.  It is slimming.   Oh yeah, and cost-effective--everything matches.  There is no reason why you shouldn't have a closet bursting at the seams with nothing but a sea of black.

However, if you are able to move beyond ubiquitous black and succeed, well then, people will be tripping over themselves to look at you.  Everyday Glamour Chick's, (E.G.C.'s), know that wearing color is a secret trump card.

The idea is to wear colors that blend, coordinate, and harmonize with your own coloring.  Your coloring includes the tones in you skin, hair, and eyes.  Colors that harmonize with your personal coloring make you look as fresh as a daisy, as pretty as a picture, and as alert as a cheerleader on espresso.  Colors that clash with your personal coloring cast shadows on your face and make you look like father time.  And not in a good way.  Also, and I can't stress this enough, but our personal coloring changes as we age and with the environment, (especially if that environment includes bleach and a chatty hairdresser named Kit.)  Your eye color may lighten.  Your skin color can change with the seasons.  And your hair...well, I think I already covered that.  So as our personal coloring changes, so do our most flattering wardrobe colors change.  'Nuff said.

Go through your wardrobe and hold up your tops next to your face and gaze into the mirror.  This must be done in natural lighting, so don't wait untill 10:00 at night to organize your closet.  Just go to sleep instead.  Purists would say hold up the tops next to your face without makeup on.  If your makeup is wrong,  then you'll be thrown off your game.  And the name of this game is "What Colors Make Me Look Fresh as a Daisy?"  Create piles.  Pile 1:  Great color on me!  Pile 2:  Good enough!  Pile 3:  Eww, that's just nasty.  Once you have created your piles you can eliminate Pile 3 or you can box it away and save it for the next time you color your hair.  Who knows?  They might work then, right?

Take Pile 1 and Pile 2 and organize them in your closet.  Season comes first, so whatever season you're in, that's what goes front and center.  So if it's Spring, then don't worry about your obvious Fall/Winter pieces, put those out of sight.  Organize your tops together and group like colors together.  Same for your pants, skirts, dresses....you get the picture.

The main rule when combining colors in an outfit is to make sure you never perfectly match.  Think about blending colors instead.   If you are having trouble with this, then think about combining a piece in a stand-out color with a piece in a neutral color.  Neutrals are:  White, Camel, Grey, Navy, Tan, Brown, Black, (hello black), Cream, Khaki, and Military green.  Also of note is that your "neutral" colored clothing doesn't have to be solid--it can be a print.  Think about pinstripes, tweed, herringbone, shearling, cable knits, and lacy bits as all being "neutral".

So I challenge you to step out and stretch yourself.  Go beyond the black.  Go ahead, live on the wild side, wear color!

Guest Blog, I Want To Be A Roitfeld

Calling all Everyday Glamour Chicks, (E.G.C.'s)!!  I have some very exciting news!  For the first time ever in Everyday Glamour history, we have a guest blogger, Ms. Kellina de Boer, of I Want to Be a Roitfeld!!  I Want to Be a Roitfeld tracks the life and style of Carine Roitfeld, Editor-in-Chief of Paris Vogue, and her utterly chic family.  By the way, just so you know, I Want To Be A Roitfeld has been featured in New York Magazine, Huffington Post, as well as a number of other high profile publications.  Sigh!  I'm so honored!  So here it is:

I Want To Dress Like A Roitfeld

By Ms. Kellina de Boer

Would you like to learn the secrets to dressing like one of the most stunning women in Paris? If so, perhaps you would like to learn how to dress like a Roitfeld. Specifically we will focus on how to dress like Carine Roitfeld, perhaps the most challenging of all. I say "challenging" because if you wish to dress like her son Vladimir, it is simple: don black trousers and either a black or white shirt underneath a black jacket, likely Armani. Julia is a bit less formulaic: a short dress by a newly discovered designer, stillettos and bag by Miu Miu, and stunning original jewelry designed by an FOJ (friend of Julia), perhaps a classmate from Parsons. Loads more variety, yet Julia's style choices are achievable provided you have the figure and the dough.

Now we come to the mother lode of style: Carine Roitfeld, editor-in-chief of Vogue Paris and editorial director of Vogue Hommes International among her many influential roles in the world of fashion (amFar and ANDAM come to mind immediately as other examples).

How to dress like Carine Roitfeld:

1. Awake at 7 a.m., stretch, Pilates.

2. Scent with Opium Body Lotion by Yves Saint Laurent.

3. Create smoky eyes using Yves Saint Laurent liner, groom brows.

Yes, this is all part of dressing like a Roitfeld! Ambience, ma chere, plus nonchalance. Très Roitfeld. Never forget that Pilates provides the perfect underpinnings for any chic ensemble. Carine's signature look combines classic designer pieces, a blouse, a tailored jacket, a knee length skirt, often in black with bare legs and killer shoes. She is most likely seeing to be taking risks with transparent clothing underneath a professional exterior while peering mysteriously out from behind her hair. Like I said, challenging...

I will leave you with a few thoughts from Carine Roitfeld's Twitter account:

  • "Of all the things you wear, your expression is the most important."

  • "Make style an expression of your soul."

  • "Fashion is something you buy, STYLE is something you OWN!"

  • "Fashion is not about utility. It is merely a piece of iconography, to express an individual's identity."

  • "Fashion isn't to make you look attractive, it's to make you look different."

  • "Never wear anything that panics the animal."

  • "I dress for women and I undress for men."
